MILTON SECOND IN FIRST ROAD RACE

Posted:

Fri 30/3/07: Battling windy conditions, skiing sensation and now cyclist, Michael Milton, came second in his first road race.

Competing in the 20km long Individual Road Time Trial (where cyclists start one minute apart) at the Toyota AWD National Road Cycling Championships at Bacchus March in Victoria, Milton was quick to point out there were only three people in his class.

"It sounds more impressive than it is," laughed Milton who was one of three male LC3 racers competing. "It's much more about the experience than the results. Although we all like to win, we really are racing for practice and experience."

Milton was pleased with his performance, having completed the course in just over 41 minutes (41:46) but says he should have finished harder.

"It was really windy and, after going out against a head wind, there was a good tail wind coming into the finish. I got a little lazy and cruised a bit. There was definitely some fuel left in the tank at the end," said Milton.

Although pleased to beat Victorian Glen Jarvis, who won the gold medal ahead of Milton in the 1km Time Trial at the 2007 Australian Track Championships, he was disappointed to be so far behind the winner, Victorian Noel Sens, who beat Milton to the finish by more than five minutes.

"Noel is a great cyclist, with a lot of experience. I'm still finding my rhythm and learning about the sport. As a first race it's not too bad but I like to win and five minutes over 20km is a huge lead. I have a lot of work to do," Milton said.

He now has a day to rest before the 40km Road Race on Sunday when he will again compete against the same two cyclists.
